Review: Blue Bird Diner, Mt. Airy, NC

Date of Visit: 2-12-11

The Blue Bird Diner
244 North Main Street
Mt. Airy, NC 27030

In a town that wasn’t quite what it seemed, we were lucky to find the one real thing: The Blue Bird Diner.

The Blue Bird doesn’t pretend to be part of the Andy Griffith show. What it does do is serve quality food at great prices and all with a smile. Not only that, dogs are welcome at the outside seating area and are greeted with a bowl of water and treats.

We decided we couldn’t pass up this chance to enjoy a true piece of Americana so we elected to eat lunch at the Blue Bird instead of eating out of our cooler. David had one of the Diner’s specialties: the Pork Chop Sandwich – a tender pork chop, hand breaded and deep fried, served on a bun with lettuce, tomato and mayo. I had the Mushroom Swiss Burger sans bun. The vanilla milkshake reminded me of an old soda fountain type.

The staff was super friendly and the service was great. All said, with our home-cooked meal, milkshake and a shared dessert, the total was under $20 including tip.
