The Organic Peddler
14475 W. Highway 160

Ravenous: that’s what I was as we entered Del Norte, Colorado during our cross-country trek. We’d been on the road for 38 days at this point, and we’d not seen hide nor hair of gluten-free offerings in a store since New Jersey (nearly 2 weeks earlier). With that much time passing, I’d completely run out of all my diet-friendly supplies.
But there it was, in all its artsy, eclectic glory: The Organic Peddler. The store is hard to miss with its outdoor sculptures, wind catchers, and the friendly painted sign sitting atop the bed of a neat red antique truck. The cold wind whipped as I entered the store.
Inside I found a different world – paintings and glassworks and sculptures sitting on shelves, and hanging from the walls and the ceiling. To the left I found the gluten-free food section: shelves going from the floor to the ceiling packed with offerings. There were rice snacks, nut snacks, potato snacks, locally made snacks, cookies, canned foods, condiments, cereals, pastas and even books on the subject. But that wasn’t all. The young lady behind the counter, who happened to be knowledgeable about Celiac Disease, directed me to the frozen case where I did find a nice variety of wheat-free breads. Finally – something to eat dinner on instead of just rolling some turkey in a piece of cheese.
I would have liked to stay for a cup of tea, but the road called, so off we went. I am extremely grateful we found The Organic Peddler. Traveling is so much more enjoyable when you’re not hungry all the time.
